A few years ago I was thinking of getting shots to travel to Africa. My friend from South Africa told me not to get them and that he'd never had them in his life. After awhile I asked him if he'd ever had malaria and he said yeah. So I asked him what happened and he said that he was paralyzed for several weeks.
Now that's living up to one's beliefs!
Addendum: I did get the shots and came down with a very high fever a few weeks later. As it turned out they were pointless anyway, because upon entering North Africa I was instantly sent back for having a "Jewish last name," no joke.
